Pua Ali’i ‘Ilima: Celebrating 35 Years of Hula is heading to NYC!

Pua Ali’i ‘Ilima, established in 1977 by Kumu Hula Vicky Holt Takamine, is heading to New York City!  Taking advantage of the inaugural rates offered by Hawaiian Airlines, Vicky booked 15 of her students to head off to NYC June 13-25, 2012.

“We’ve confirmed our performance at Jacob’s Pillow to celebrate the opening of the Jacob’s Pillow’s Dance Festival on the Indoor/Outdoor Stage,” says Kumu Vicky. “It will be the 50th Anniversary of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and we’re honored to be a part of that prestigious celebration.”

Our O’ahu students will be joined by our New York City haumana as well as my nephew, Kaloku Holt, and sister in law, Deva Yamashiro, who are teaching hula and performing in Vancouver, Washington. Nā kumu hula Momi Kamahele and Jeffrey Kānekaiwilani Takamine are both working with Vicky to develop a program that will showcase the work that Pua Ali’i ‘Ilima has done over the past 35 years.  “We expect to include new works choreographed and/or performed by Jeff & Momi as well,” says Vicky.
