Native Hawaiian artists participated in the First Peoples Fund’s Professional Development Workshop at PA’I Arts & Culture Center this past weekend. FPF trainers Theresa Secord (Penobscot basket weaver) and Ron Martinez Looking Elk (Taos Pueblo, pottery) shared personal experiences and best practices of their journey towards the development of their art as a profession. Ron and Theresa were joined by Keone Nunes who shared valuable tips on how to identify, define and clarify the artists objectives and goals to help our artists focus and strategically plan for achieving their goal of becoming a successful artist who can sustain themselves and their families by promoting and marketing their art.

Blaine Fergestrom, popped in on Saturday afternoon to show our artists how easy it is to set up and update their own websites. Let’s follow www.maileandrade.com and see how she’s doing on her website…yesterday, it was just a shell on godaddy.com. Let’s see how long it takes for her to get up and running!

The First Peoples Fund Workshop is made possible through generous funding from the Ford Foundation, Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, Artspace, Mayor’s Office of Culture and Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town.

Welina mai nei! If you are a Native Hawaiian Artist and would like to be a part of MAMo (Maoli Arts Month), click here!

For those of you who do not know what MAMo is, MAMo is a month long celebration for all Native Hawaiian artists, both visual as well as performing. We are always looking for new talent. MAMo takes place during the month of May; however, this year MAMo will be starting in April with the opening of the newly renovated Wailoa Art Gallery in Hilo. Wailoa Art Gallery will be curated by Kaʻohu Seto and Bernice Akamine. This gallery will be showing through Merrie Monarch, and here Native Hawaiian artists and their works will be able to be seen by more than just the local crowd.

During the month of May, we will kick off the MAMo celebration on May 4, 2012 at First Friday in Downtown/Chinatown. The main MAMo exhibit will be at the Arts at Mark’s Garage. This showcase will be curated by MAMo co-chair Noelle Kahanu of the Bishop Museum. Also on this night, we will be honoring a Native Hawaiian artist who has paved the way for other Hawaiian artists. More information on this awardee is soon to come.

Our next celebration of Hawaiian art will take place at the MAMo Wearable Art Show (WAS). The MAMo WAS will take place at the Hawaiʻi Theatre on Thursday, May 17, 2012. The show starts at 7 pm. Stay tuned to see when tickets will go on sale for this event! The WAS celebrates Native Hawaiian designers. This year, we have Maile Andrade, Marques Marzan, Pā Kuʻi a Lua, Harinani Orme and Wahine Toa (Nita Pilago) confirmed to be a part of the WAS as of today. At our WAS we will also be having a silent auction, which will be located on the second level of the Hawaiʻi Theatre. Here, all MAMo artists will have the opportunity to put one or two of their pieces up for bid!

The last event is the Native Hawaiian Arts Market at the Bishop Museum on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20, 2012. We will also have keiki art booths set up with FREE art things for the keiki to do and try. At this arts market, we will be featuring our Native Hawaiian Visual AND Performing artists.

If you are a Native Hawaiian Artist and are interested in joining MAMo, please click here and submit your MAMo application. If you have any questions, please call 808.237.4555 or email kaiu.pacc@gmail.com.
