Initiatives

To accomplish our goals, we continue to partner with community, non-profit, federal and state organizations to successfully create and implement events, programs and outreach activities that strengthen our native Hawaiian community.

For the past six years, PA‘I Foundation has served as a fiscal sponsor for numerous organizations and collaboration projects. Locally we served as fiscal sponsors for the Hale Kua‘i Trademark Study, a needs assessment survey of native Hawaiian cultural practitioners and artists on the issues of trademark and copyright. We continue to serve as fiscal sponsors for the Hawaii Pono‘i Coalition, and ‘Īlio‘ulaokalani Coalition for community organizing activities around native rights and the protection of the natural and cultural resources of Hawai‘i. PA‘I also served as a fiscal sponsor for Ke Kukui Foundation in Vancouver, Washington. Vicky Holt Takamine serves on their advisory board and assisted them in forming their non-profit organization.

Since 2004 PA‘I has sent 45 native Hawaiian high school sophomores and juniors to Harvard Medical School for a three week summer program to study substance and drug abuse with other native American students from the Hopi, Wampanoag and Navajo tribes. The Program’s major goals are (1) to improve the opportunity for Native American high school students to engage in science education and pursue careers in the biomedical sciences at leading institutions and (2) to provide training to their teachers in the content and pedagogical methods of biomedical sciences.

Since 2006, PA‘I has successfully organized and implemented this month – long celebration to highlight native Hawaiian arts, artists and cultural practitioners. Held annually in May, we have partnered with Hawai‘i’s reknown Bishop Museum to coordinate a two day Native Hawaiian Arts Market and Keiki Arts Festival on the grounds of the Bishop Museum. We have also partnered with the Bishop Museum, Louis Pohl Gallery and the Arts at Mark’s Garage to coordinate exhibits and workshops in downtown Honolulu art galleries.

The Hapa Haole Festival event brings together musicians, dancers, and scholars to showcase the music and dance of this interesting Hawaiian dance genre. The project objective is to create activities and events that showcase Hapa Haole Music and dance that will be of interest to residents, visitors, scholars, collectors, students, musicians, dancers, artists, keiki and kupuna.
